No denying McCullagh this time
He may have narrowly lost out (by a short head) on Strategic Force in the Dundalk opener, but there was to be no denying Niall McCullagh in race two on the polytrack as he landed the spoils on Paul Flynn's 16/1 chance (from 25s) Try Again. Fri 06th Jan
He ran well in Cheltenham the last time. We didn’t have a great time travelling and went to the boat twice and we weren’t allowed on it. It upset him and he didn’t eat when he was over there. He ran a great race considering everything. He’s still a novice so he could even tip over to England or could come back here for the big handicap hurdle. He’ll probably get enough weight after that!. He’s starting to jump well but didn’t jump well when he started off.
Paul W Flynn
It was unlucky for Barry Browne as he had to ride the second horse and we just came and done him but that’s racing. He settles around tight tracks but pulled the life out of him (Robbie Power) there. He was so keen he thought he wouldn’t finish, but he gave him a chance and he ran on again.
Paul W Flynn
I wasn't actually going to run him as he wasn't eating. He never leaves food and he didn't eat since yesterday when I declared him so it was fifty-fifty but I knew he'd love the ground and the track. Yer man (St Gallen) got away from us in Galway but we can't say the draw beat us as he was outside us. He's a grand tough horse. All the horses are running well but we're getting all seconds and it's grand to get one on the board. He was going to go to a 0-70 in the Curragh in a week or so but we won't get in there now and he'll probably go to Listowel. He jumps well. I ran him on firm ground over hurdles and he couldn't handle the tracks I ran on him, as well as the ground. He's well handicapped over hurdles if he gets his conditions. He's probably better on longer tracks but having said that he might go back to Galway as you nearly have to run where the races are. We'll just keep him going to the end of the year now.
Paul W Flynn
That's two in two days (Boher Call won for the yard at Thurles yesterday) — it's a miracle!. I think he's improving. The only thing that put me off was that they don't normally win three-in-a-row up here. I just thought he had improved all the time at home. He had one set back since his last race. On a windy night a bunch of dogs got in and one of them bit him on the leg. He was lucky to be here!. Luckily he was alright and maybe the few days off did him good. He's actually in here next Thursday. I'd be greedy to run him but I probably will! I'd prefer to go to Leopardstown though — that's the original plan. It would be more sensible to go to Leopardstown as he will go with a bit of cut in the ground.
Paul W Flynn
I'd say he was just a bit weak and he's definitely improving a bit. I'd say he'll probably go hurdling with a bit of ease in the summer. He might also have a go on the turf somewhere on easier ground. He just idled a bit and might just be feeling it a little bit here. It's maybe just a little quick for him.
Paul W Flynn
He was a massive price as the last day he ran too free and was only caught on the line. It was great to get Niall McCullagh for a race like this (jockeys who have not ridden 10 winners since end of June) as he'd missed out a lot with injury. We have not had a winner in a long time and it's nice to get it. He can jump a hurdle, although he's not done it in public yet.
Paul W Flynn
