Another Irish story in cross country
Irish domination of the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase continued but not as most punters would have anticipated as A New Story scored at 25/1 under 17-year-old teenager Adrian Heskin.
The confident 7lb claimer teamed up with his boss Michael Hourigan, and the 12-year-old gelding was produced on the run-in to beat L'Ami (4/1) by two and a half lengths, with Lacdoudal (28/1) another two and three quarter lengths away in third.
Another Jewel (16/1) was a further neck back in fourth, while 7/4 favourite Garde Champetre made a costly mistake inside the final mile before keeping on well to take fifth.
“I couldn't have asked for a better ride. He didn't do a whole lot in front but was pulling double coming to the last. I didn't know whether to kick on or sit. It's a dream come true,” said a delighted Heskin of his first Festival ride.
The winner could make a swift return to action as Hourigan is considering a quick follow up at Uttoxeter on Saturday. "He ran a cracker at Naas when beaten by Dancing Tornedo, and I was wondering turning in today whether he could do it because this is his first win in nearly five years," said the Patrickswell trainer.
"He needs 16 to come out to get into the Midlands National and, if that happens, he will run."
L'Ami's owner JP McManus said: "Unfortunately we've just found one better than us today but the horse has done us proud."
