Willy Twiston-Davies is to undergo further scans this morning after fracturing two vertebrae and cracking two ribs in a fall on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival.

The rider sustained his injuries when parting company with Foxtail Hill, who is trained by his father Nigel, in the concluding Close Brothers Novices' Handicap Chase.

Having initially walked into the ambulance at the track after his tumble, subsequent scans at the Gloucester Royal Hospital, where Twiston-Davies was kept in overnight, showed the injury was far worse than first thought.

Twiston-Davies senior said: "He is going for another scan this morning at the Gloucester Royal Hospital. He has broken two ribs and his T8 and T9 vertebrae.

"He does sound a bit miserable because of the uncertainty.

"The horse is fine, he is just a bit bruised."
