We went back for a bumper to Down Royal the last day, but he obviously wasn't a bumper horse,. He looked to be running a good second that day but fizzled out. In fairness while he finished last of four then, it wasn't a bad run as he was beaten no distance. Previously he had come home well over hurdles at Listowel and maybe hurdles in front of him is what he wants. While he isn't in the top drawer, he is a nice horse and will go for a rated novice next. The owners (Lyreen Syndicate) are good loyal owners of mine for years so I'm delighted for them.

It is his first run for five months and Darragh knows him very well having won a bumper and maiden hurdle on him. We couldn't look past him with his 7lb claim on that ground, which is worth its weight in gold. This horse was my first winner, he is still flying the flag and is a mighty horse. He isn't big, but is very well-bred and jumps hurdles very well. He pulled up in the Galway Hurdle when they went a million (speed) and we were behind and beaten after the first hurdle. He didn't really get a race though, but the thing about him is he can hit flat spots in his races. . He ran well when finishing fourth in the Red Mills Hurdle at Gowran last year and that is an option again. It is mighty for the five-member syndicate (Red Strand Syndicate) and there are a lot of happy people here, although two are at home with Covid, another is in Copenhagen and he couldn't make it. They are west Cork people and we had our initial syndicate meeting in the Red Strand (in Cork).

Thanks to Ross and his staff and I've had an unbelievable year and had a horse finish second at 100/1 in Cheltenham. Even walking in today, there was a penny on the ground and I said to the lads 'pick up a penny and you'll have luck all day long'!. We won this race in 2010 and had a great night and we'll have a great night again tonight. The horses are on fire and when we started off training, Tommy came to us with a horse and has been with us since. You won't find a better owner and when your back is against the wall, this is the number one to look after you. We're pinching ourselves and are in shock at how well the horses are running. It doesn't last forever but we'll keep enjoying it while it is rolling. There are loads of lads similar to me that just need the chance. I'm also delighted for Tom Harney to get his chance as it keeps the whole team together and there is a great atmosphere and vibe in the yard at the moment.

He needs a bit of nicer ground and needs a trip. Looking at him today I think he needs a fence too, but I’ll wait until the new season comes in. We’ll find a nice hurdle race between now and the end of Punchestown (festival). Possibly something in Fairyhouse for him. He didn’t enjoy Mallow. He didn’t take Paul along at all, so we took the hood off him today and I think it made a big difference. He was always very free, but he’s changed now. He’s more mature and is settling in his races, so it makes him easier to ride. It probably wasn’t the highest standard of race either. He’s improving and maybe the ones around him aren’t. I was happy to get that and I think his future might lie over fences.

There should be more meetings at Bellewstown and Downpatrick! We save on diesel coming here!. He's a very frustrating sort of a horse - you can see there he has plenty of ability, but has his own mind about everything. Ger Fox does a very good job riding him at home and has him nice and switched off. He probably jumped better when they were going quicker than when they were going slower. He steadied into the last, he's okay when he is in tight. He's not one you trust implicitly but has loads of ability. You'd hope so (reach a higher level) - I wouldn't be surprised if he went to England for a little novice hurdle to teach him a little bit more and maybe scare them off a bit!. Then he is going to have to step up, but that was a good pot and when we spotted it, we said we would have a crack at it. Of course, the man on board can't do anything wrong. He has been getting other rides as well which is important, and it is going to be even more important in a couple of days when he loses the claim. The two lads (Alex and Ben Harvey) are excellent riders, it is just there is so much competition over here and that's the problem. Other guys are looking at him to use him as well, so it is great.

The Lads & Eoin Syndicate (owners) was huge at one time but has dwindled down and there are just three of us stuck in him now.
