The whole plan was obviously to go back chasing with him and the plan now is to go to the Troytown. I didn't want to run him in today's earlier chase as if he won he'd have risked picking up a penalty, so I said we might as well have a run over hurdles where he is rated 15lb lower. He had a setback after his last run and when I got him back later in the season, it was too late to run. He has grown up, matured and grown a lot stronger as he had been a big shell of a horse. His owner Philip Polly is in Dubai so hopefully he is watching on TV.

She was entitled to do that, the trip was a bit sharp but it was a very poor race,. She wants to win and likes being a race horse. Hopefully, there is a future for her on the Flat although there isn't much left between now and the end of the season, so we might pop back over jumps now. She is the only horse I have for JP (McManus) at the minute and has now won a bumper, over hurdles and fences, and today on the Flat, so not many do 'the four'.

We were kind of expecting that, she’s very fit. When she was running over hurdles, off a higher mark, three miles on soft ground was what she wanted. Her jumping was a revelation there, she was very quick. She’s not the biggest mare but she’s just very accurate. She might squeeze in, off her revised mark, into something nice - a nice, staying handicap chase like the Leinster National in Naas. She’s a winter soft-ground mare. I’d be hoping next year that she could make up into a graded mare over a trip. I’m delighted for Finny, who is working full-time for us. He’s getting the opportunities as we’re splitting the rides between Sean (Flanagan) and himself. He’s a very good rider.

He got up on the line to win in Limerick on bottomless ground as well, he just stayed at it really well. I thought when they came around him he was going to be third. I knew he’d stay at it, but I didn’t think he’d catch the winner. He was an unlucky faller in a beginners’ chase before. He jumped well today. He said he was grand and idle in second place the whole way around. He hit the line fairly well. It was a chase for horses rated 120 or less, so it was grand for him and it’s nice to get off the mark over fences with him. Hopefully he’ll make into a nice staying chaser on soft ground. We might try him with a light weight in better races and see how we go. I thought the ground would be a bit quick today but they went a good gallop on it. He definitely wants three miles, that’s not going to happen very often where they stop like that and come back to him. He stays at it well and jumped an awful lot better today. I thought for a big horse he was maybe lacking a bit of scope, but he jumped well today.

It has been painful! Going from his bumper wins and the way he works at home, it has been a calamity. He is a work-in-progress regarding his jumping. He has been very slow to learn and Ger Fox schooled him at the weekend and Ger couldn't believe how he hadn't got the hang of it. When he left him alone at a hurdle, he still needs a lot of help. It is a mental thing with him and hopefully he is switched on now. I told Alex to be very definite with what he wanted him to do at each hurdle - either to go short or to go long. It will come and that might boost his confidence. He has the engine there if he put it all together that he could turn into a really nice horse, but it is great to get that over with.

If we could find another mares chase like that it would be grand. For a few lengths before the last I thought we were in trouble, but she put it to bed very fast then. They are unbelievable and every year when I need a dig out or when I find a horse which isn’t massively expensive, they keep going and buying. Their appetite for jumps racing is just incredible and they are a lovely family. His jumping was brilliant today but hadn’t always been that way. Simon (Torrens) gave him an unbelievable ride around Tramore the last day where the fences are smaller, and I think he got a lot of confidence from it. When I tell Tiernan (Power Roche) to pop off and make the running it is scary, as he is so positive and so accurant over a fence. He is an extraordinarily talented young fella, so I’m delighted to have both him and Simon on our own little team.

A good run the last day and I suppose he deserved to be the price he was. . Loads of experience and I'd say when he came to us his work had been nice. I really fancied him the first day he ran and he ran terribly and was beaten 50 lengths on very heavy ground. . His best runs have been on this surface and I presume that's what he likes - he was second the last day in Ballinrobe on good ground. . I'd say the key to him probably nice ground so we will keep him going now for the summer, the fact that he is handling it well. . He had a couple of real good runs with Mags (Mullins) and a real good run behind Harvard Guy in Navan one day. I spoke to Mags the other day and she thought the same that a nicer surface just helps him. . He stays well and probably wants a trip, I'd say three miles is right up his alley. He’s a magical horse. Things just didn’t go his way in Punchestown (last time) and he was very unlucky he didn’t win the Mayo National,. He got a fall in Galway and lost his way a little bit after it. That’s seven races he’s won now, he’s a phenomenal horse. He’s a well-bred horse and a good strong horse. The Dan Moore (January 10th) back here will probably be his next run. On soft ground he’s better over two miles.

He had a promising run on his return when finishing fourth at Navan and he’s come on a little bit from it. I was a little bit concerned about the ground today, but he handled it well and it’s brilliant to get a winner here at Christmas for JP. It’s been a while since we had a Christmas winner and we’re over the moon. It seemed to go pretty straight forward and it’s nice to get it. Hopefully he might come back here for the Dublin Racing Festival. We’ll see how it goes between now and then and have a chat with Frank (Berry, racing manager).

He deserved that. He’s been placed in his last three runs and gone up 7lb,. It was important to try and win with him before he crept up another few pounds. He’s not blessed with speed but he’s a real tough, genuine, honest, horse. He’ll go chasing sooner rather than later, he jumps a fence very well. He loves a bit of good ground, so he’ll run away for the summer now.
