Formscan By Gary Carson - ZOFFMAN (3) has been consistent, both on the Flat and over hurdles, and may be able to gain a deserved victory. The Noel Meade-trained gelding ran a big race on his penultimate outing when collared late on by Smallcraftwarning at Gowran. He is now 3lb better off with that rival, who returns to hurdles now after a fall over fences at Punchestown just over three weeks ago. John Ryan’s charge was a bit out of his league last time in Grade 3 company but is entitled to be a big player again now. Hopeful Hero won here at the start of last month before being outclassed in Grade 2 company at Chepstow eight days later. He’s respected back in handicap company.

Things just didn’t go to plan in Clonmel yesterday,. It ended up like a little bit of work for him basically the way the race went. He missed the first and was locked in in a bit of trouble. He ate and he drank last night and he was full of beans in the paddock this morning so we said we’d chance it. I’m delighted for the owner, Niall Kennelly. He’s a big supporter of mine and has been with me through thick and thin. He’s been really loyal to me. That horse has been unlucky all the way, he’s got knocked down in more races and got into bad luck. We fancied him today and it’s nice that it worked out, it doesn’t always happen.

Good things come in small parcels. He was bred by the starter (Joe Banahan) and he’s a half-brother to Sheishybrid. His other half-brother (Athlumney Warrior) won for Michael O’Callaghan on the all-weather. It’s a good family and has been lucky for us. He’ll mix it between the Flat and jumping and I’m hoping he might get one of the good Flat handicaps somewhere during the summer. He’s not very big but he carried 11-12 there and he jumps brilliant. I always said he was too small to be jumping but the first day we schooled him all he wanted to do was go. I’m sure the better ground will be a help to him.

He’s always been a nice horse, but it took him a while to mature,. Even when he hit the front there, he lost his concentration a bit jumping. He can jump very well, but he fluffed the last two. He’s a horse with a lot of ability, it was just about getting his mind right and getting him going. It’s taken a long time. Darren and John at home have done a great job with him, because he started off being a very free horse. There are a wonderful bunch of lads ((Cool Out Again Syndicate) in him and I’m delighted for them. He’ll jump fences and he’s a nice horse. He wants good ground but he’ll go on loose, soft, ground but not on heavy ground. He has too much speed for heavy ground.

They are a great bunch of lads and to be honest with you, they have been waiting a while. The horse is good in this grade and he has been knocking on the door, he deserved to get one. It was great that it happened today and Keith gave him a great ride. He handled the ground really well, wants good ground. He's in his bracket. A couple of times he has been found kind of wanting, just got lonely in front one day and just little small reasons for getting beaten. He's no star, but 0-95 is his grade. Horses are flying, thank God. Whatever suits will go to Galway and we will be there, hopefully.
