Review LAYTOWN 5TH SEP

Declan McDonogh extended his advantage at the top of the Flat jockeys' table by recording a 25/1 double aboard the Adrian McGuinness-trained pair Miracle Ridge and Speagle.

Locally based McGuinness has rejuvenated the veteran Miracle Ridge this term, and the 11-y-o made it five wins this year in the opening six furlongs handicap.

The 3/1 favourite, who may bid to add to this victory at Tipperary next week, was always up with the pace before stretching clear inside the final furlong to beat Paris Sue by two and a half lengths.

McDonogh needed to be at his strongest in the seven furlongs claimer as Speagle bravely held off a determined Ruby Walsh aboard Kid Creole by a head.

'That's my 19th winner this season and Declan has been on 14 of them. This is a hardy horse and he should make a grand hurdler,' said McGuinness.

This double leaves McDonogh six ahead (67-61) in the jockeys' championship of Johnny Murtagh, whose disappointing afternoon on the beach was magnified with the defeat of Kleinova in the 7f maiden.

The well-backed 5/4 favourite lost about five lengths at the start and, after gradually making up the deficit to lead inside the final furlong, was collared close home by the fast-finishing Mill House Girl.

'She won two bumpers but then lost her way a bit, and will probably go now for a mares maiden hurdle at Listowel,' said winning trainer Shane Donohoe of the Seamus Heffernan-ridden mare.

Portant Fella visited the winners' enclosure for the second time in just 24 hours when taking the 7f amateurs handicap under Nina Carberry.

The Joanna Morgan-trained gelding, successful in a handicap chase at Roscommon on Monday evening, was completed a four-timer in the space of 16 days having previously scored twice over hurdles.

The versatile seven-year-old travelled strongly on the near side and, despite drifting left when striking the front over a furlong out, kept on under pressure to hold Sling Back by a neck.

Dame Rochelle provided a 20/1 shock in the six furlongs handicap, swooping late under Oliver Casey to beat the 9/4 favourite Scalado by a length.

'She has worked very well at home but not really done it on the track, so we decided to come here in the hope that it would liven her up,' said trainer Gerry Stack.

Casey was adjudged by the stewards to have used his whip with excessive frequency, and was given a two days suspension (September 14 & 16).

Katie Walsh successfully teamed up with Collingwood, trained by her dad Ted, to make virtually all in the concluding 7f conditions race.
