Debutante Winemaker was the surprise 100/1 winner of Naas' Irish EBF Auction Series Maiden today, scoring for trainer Jimmy Coogan, owner Diego Dias and jockey Gavin Ryan.

Bought for €12,000 at Arqana in June, Winemaker was trimmed from 150/1 to 100/1 near the off, was returned with a Betfair SP of 286 and in the race showed greeness edging left in the closing stages but held runner-up Mount Mary by half a length.

Winemaker was the first Irish winner by his sire Johnny Barnes and Coogan reported “I thought he’d run well and with a bit of luck might finish in the first three or four. I’m very happy with him. He’s shown a bit at home and has worked well.”

He added “he was bought for 12 grand at a breeze up sale in France and the owner (Diego Dias) is a man who sells, so I’d say he’ll probably be sold.”
