A little unlucky in running when fourth over course and distance last weekend, 7/1 chance Slieve Binnian capitalised on a better run around in the Holden Plant Rental Handicap to gain a second career success.

Ronan Whelan 's mount, trained in partnership at Conyngham Lodge by Michael Halford and Tracey Collins, raced close to the pace from the outset and got a clear run down the straight to lead over a furlong out. The Awtaad gelding was ridden out to score to beat fast-finisher Luke Short and Eastern Legend by a neck and the same.

“I wouldn't normally pull a horse out that quick but he didn't have much luck in running last week and he was in such good form all week so I said I'd let him take his chance,” said Halford.

“I'm delighted for Paul Rooney as he's had a couple of placed ones lately. Paul's Dad has been unwell, and he's at home, so Paul wasn't able to come today. It's a great boost for them and he's a great supporter of ours.

“We were trying hard to get a winner for them so I'm glad he got his head in front.

“He's a lovely, tough, genuine horse and it just happened for him today. That's a good trip and good ground.

“He's a galloper, he's just not blessed with pace to get himself out of trouble so a big track like this suits him. On some of the tighter tracks he can get into a bit of trouble in running.

“He'll get sharper with racing but I think he loves it here, it's a good test.

“He galloped all the way to the line there, they were coming at him on all sides and it was a long last furlong.

“Ronan is riding great as well and the horses are healthy and well. The whole team is working well. It was a big change for everybody, moving back to the Curragh and joining forces with Tracey and her team. It's all working out really well for everyone, we're all as one, so it's great.”
