Dermot Weld makes it 18

Dermot Weld saddled his first winner of the week at Galway when Broad Meaning produced a gutsy performance in the juvenile maiden.

The master of Rosewell House was landing the race for a remarkable 18th time as the son of Oasis Dream repelled the challenge of market rival Drumbeat by half a length.

Pat Smullen had the Khalid Abdullah-owned colt to the fore throughout and went on two furlongs from home. Drumbeat threw down a challenge inside the final furlong but couldn't find a way past.

"It was a very good performance. They are two good tough colts," said Weld.

"We'll look for a stakes race for him. There is a Listed race at Tipperary and also the Acomb Stakes at York. Seven furlongs is his minimum and he found a little bit more when challenged today."
