Family success for O'Neill's in Cork bumper

Sun 11th Dec 2011, 16:23

John O’Neill outsmarted his rivals aboard Rory O’Moore as he recorded his first ever winner in the bumper at Cork this afternoon.

O’Neill soon kicked on aboard his mount, which is trained by his father Ronald in Kells Co Kilkenny and owned by his sister Deborah, and never saw another rival from there coming home an easy ten length winner at the odds of 11/1. Hasty Times was best of the rest back in second at 5/1 while newcomer The Pounds finished third at 11/2.

The winning 6yo son of Stowaway was having his sixth career run and his first of 2011. He showed promise last season and finished fourth in two bumpers at Thurles and Clonmel respectively.

Winning trainer Ronald O’Neill said afterwards: “He is a full brother to Aland Islands who has won twice for Tim Vaughan. He was a big baby last year and we just had to give him time.

“That is my son John’s first winner and his twenty.”
