Review NAVAN 22nd Oct

Wed 22nd Oct 2008, 18:10

Aidan O'Brien saddled a 1-2 as he landed the Breda McGuinness Navan Lady Golf Captain Maiden for the fifth successive season.

However, it wasn't in the order expected by punters, with newcomer Fame And Glory (6-1) accounting for favourite Sirgarfieldsobers

The market leader appeared to have matters sewn up when taking over from his stablemate over a furlong from the finish, but Stephen Hunter conjured another run out of Fame And Glory, who rallied well to prevail by a length and three-quarters.< Peacock's Pride displayed similar resolution to hang on in the Leo Slattery Navan Golf President Handicap.

Having been in the firing line throughout, Fran Ennis's 8-1 chance was attacked from all sides but dug deep to beat Lee Applause by half a length.

Pat Smullen stretched his lead in the title race to four when 11-10 favourite Lunduv outclassed her rivals in the Meath Fillies Race, passing the post five lengths ahead of Stairway To Glory < Rudolph Schmidt shed her maiden tag at the third attempt in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Auction Maiden.

The 5-1 chance quickened clear at the furlong marker on her way to a length-and-a-quarter defeat of Orlando Dawn < Doctor Deejay had three duck eggs next to his name prior to the Dick Norton Navan Golf Captain Nursery but left that form well behind.

Shane Foley brought the 12-1 shot with a well-timed challenge from the rear and he stuck his neck out to fend off Aine Beag by a neck.< Fairy Flow (11-2) completed a hat-trick with a bloodless victory in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap, crossing the line nine lengths in front of Morrigan under Johnny Fahy.

Fahy just failed in his bid to double up when Lord Rathvinden beat all bar Kaitlins Joy (8-1) in the Garlow Cross Handicap. The winner had let down favourite-backers at Cork last time but returned to form with a four-length triumph.
