Waarif edges thriller for Prendergast & Hayes

Waarif just prevailed, under a strong drive from Chris Hayes, in a thrilling finish to the Coral.ie Maiden at Dundalk. Schubert kicked for home early in the straight in the mile contest but was joined by Waarif inside the final furlong.
There was little to split the pair in the closing stages with the Kevin Prendergast-trained colt just getting the verdict by a nose at the line.
The 15/8 joint favourite was a promising fourth on his most recent start at Navan in May.
“He's very genuine. We freshened him up after Navan and the boss was adamant a drop back in trip should suit him. He's probably right judged on that,” said Hayes.
“He gave a blow a furlong out and I think there is a bit of improvement in him as long as the handicapper doesn't cripple him.”
