Wachman wins 1000 Guineas with Again

Sun 24th May 2009, 15:39

Trainer David Wachman recorded his first Classic winner at The Curragh today, when his Again provided Team Coolmore with their tenth consecutive Irish Classic winner, in the boylesports.com Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Ace jockey Johnny Murtagh held the daughter of Danehill Dancer up on the outside of the outer group, progressed in the centre of the track to eventually get the filly's head in front close home for a neck win over British raider Lahaleeb with Jim Bolger's Oh Goodness Me in third.

Afterwards a delighted Wachman reported "I thought the line would never come! I am very lucky to have her and it's great to train a Classic winner."

He added %u201CJohnny (Murtagh) gave her a very good ride but did say the lack of a run this season didn't help her cause. However he said he felt confident of winning from a furlong and a half out.%u201D

%u201CAlthough Again has won on heavy ground a few times now, she wouldn't be suited by testing ground. She isn't quirky but can be a little tricky to train and needs a bit of management with a few little issues.%u201D

Regarding plans for Again, Wachman has several options. He stated %u201Cshe now has options in three races, although one of those, the Epsom Oaks, is in 12 days time - that's not to say I'm ruling it out, as she should stay further.%u201D

%u201CAgain could also run in the Coronation Cup or the Pretty Polly Stakes here in a month. We'll just have to see how she comes out of this race.%u201D
