Light too good for boys in Killavullan

100 for the season for Smullen
On the back of a debut Dundalk fifth placing fifty days back, Making Light progressed very nicely to take the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Median Auction Fillies Maiden (Plus 10 Race) at Limerick under Pat Smullen. Mon 03rd Oct
That was a nice performance by her. She’s won two Group races and has had a summer break. She’s very fresh and well and she did it very impressively. She’s in the Matron (at Leopardstown) and I think that will be her next start. I wanted to run her today as it gives me a nice time as a prep for the Matron.

She's a very consistent filly and it's nice to win another Group race with her,. All being well she'll go for the Gladness, that would be the logical progression for her. Over seven or a mile, she seems to be equally versatile. I gather what happened (on the way to the start) was that there are swings down below and some of the children ran out and she unseated Leigh. She was always travelling like a winner all the way through and the only slight concern I had was a mile on the very heavy ground, on the score of fitness. It's lovely to win the first Group race of the year. Obviously we're hopeful that Pat will be back soon. She's a lovely mare and a lovely mare to train. I think she'll be equally effective over seven as a mile the way she was travelling there at the seven. It was lovely to win it especially as Eva Maria (Bucher-Haefner) was here today, she came over to see her run.

Declan (McDonogh) gave him a grand ride and popped along. He said he wasn't doing a whole lot in front. He was pricking his old ears and could have done with a bit of company late on. she's (Making Light) a very consistent filly and was beaten a short-head at Naas the other day and a nose today but she got it and we're delighted. She won a group 3 race here last year and this was important because she's gone this year without winning. It was vital that she got this race.

I won this race with a filly before, Big Break, and I thought it was the ideal race for this filly,. It was an excellent ride by Pat and he was in the right place at the right time. She quickened nicely and did it well. She's a good filly. She was very impressive when she won her maiden and has backed it up in a group race now. Hopefully she'll appear in a classic trial here next spring. It's been a wonderful year for Pat and I. We've won over 90 races and I think we had 10 group winners apart from the Derby wins. Spring, summer and autumn they've been running well and Pat has ridden brilliantly.
