I’ve had a couple of bad accidents in the last few years so your body kind of shuts down, and I put down a couple of bad nights after Thurles. A first-time-out horse backed in on top of me, knocked me over and ‘buried’ me. I got bruised all over, and the real injuries came in the sternum, ribs and collarbone areas. With the way the world is going and with people receiving treatment for various things, you’d be thankful it wasn’t worse. I’m used to the injuries and if I printed them, it would take a book, but I’m nearly gone to the stage now with one more thump, I’ll say goodbye. I rode out six horses this morning though.

At home, we knew she had improved and while we were concerned about the ground, in fairness to Paddy (McDonald, owner from nearby Barntown, Wexford), he kept her in and kept her going. He’s a horse that’s always had his own mind. As a young horse he didn’t handle the tough tacky ground - it might be a little bit dead there, but I’d say it might have suited him. The second horse (Kilbrin Rocco), of Eoin McCarthy’s, had a great run, but he might want it slightly better and I’d say we got our ground. He was out all winter and came in a bit poor. He got six or eight weeks of lunging and three weeks of riding and he ran a great race in Limerick. We were happy to be in the first three today. It was unlucky on Philip Byrnes as his horse went for the wing (of the second-last hurdle) and the two boys on his outside lost out. My horse lost his two hind shoes and that, without a doubt, happened at the second-last. This horse deserved to win as he was unlucky at Clonmel the last day when he put his foot in a hole and slipped up. He fractured ribs and everything in that fall, so today is his first day back. I'm tired talking about watering of tracks, but there is a difference in the ground today and that is why almost everyone is going wide. It is the owners' first winner with me so I'm delighted, as we had a few quid on him in Clonmel. I go over to London once in a while to meet the syndicate and when we meet for a pint, it usually takes three days!

She ran well in maidens but then disappointed and she's not the most straightforward filly to train. She has her issues, but when things are right, she's right. . I thought dropping back in grade today to a 0 to 100 that it would have to give her a chance and I didn't mind not claiming off of her for that reason. . I actually have to apologise to Alex Harvey because I was sure he was in Galway. Alex normally rides her but I put down Sean as he rides out at home as well. Gerard Berkery is from Tipperary but he had a horse at home I'd say around 15 years ago. We knew him from before and he rang me back at the start of the season asking would we take this filly. . Too impressive! The ground is important to her. Cillian (McConnell) rode her in the Student Derby (Curragh, 2023) and led everywhere bar the line that day and cost us a lot of money - I'm only forgiving him now!. She loved that ground and the last day was probably too quick for her. I think anything with 'good' in it is probably too quick for her. I told Gary she stays well and that's why he sent her on, but he didn't realise he had sent her on that much. I’m delighted for the owner who has been very, very patient with her and me, and got his reward today, so hopefully she can go on. She has obviously hurdle form as well, so she might mix it through the summer.

She’s a bit of fun. We got her last year, she hadn’t won anything, and she just likes our place,. She’s very happy at home. She loves her work but when we got her first she didn’t like it. After about two months she sweetened up. I’d love to have got her when she was a five-year-old, it’s near the end of her career but it’s fantastic to get a win no matter what. He said that was the best she’s felt when he’s rode her, that she travelled unbelievably well. That she was on the bridle nearly all the way. She’s carrying me up the gallop every day, no wonder she looked back at Phillip and saw nothing!. She could come back here at the end of October. We’ll probably go to Listowel. Tom Maher is probably going to breed from her. I’m not interested in breeding horses, I’m too old for that. By the time the foal would be four, I’d be on a Zimmer frame!. We enjoy every win and Wexford has been very good to us over the years. She’s won here four times now. The left-handed track definitely suits her. Any time we’ve ran her right-handed, anywhere sharp, she wouldn’t travel.

It’s nice at the age of eight when they hit a bit of form,. I love the idea of training horses that can stay going season after season. He was running at two and has run every year from two to eight. I do like the concept of a horse winning at 10 or 11, horses that want to do it and enjoy doing it over a period of time. You’d wonder did he want to do it at times because he has refused to race several times. He planted at the start last year in Thurles and stayed in the stalls at Dundalk and Gowran. He got suspended for one of his days in Thurles. There have been plenty of times he’s been out of love with the game and we’ve just tried to coax him back into it.
