Abbey Retired

The Howard Johnson-trained Grey Abbey has been retired.

Johnson’s popular 12-year-old failed to complete his only two races this term and connections have therefore taken the decision to call it a day.

“There seemed no point going on,” Johnson told the Racing Post.

“In two runs this season he just wasn’t sparking and I didn’t want him to run badly again.

“He seems to have grown old quickly but he has retired up at Abbeytown and should have a good home up there.”

Grey Abbey won 15 of his 43 career starts — including the Betfair Bowl at Aintree last term and the Scottish National in 2004 — and earned over #360,000 in prize money.
