Accent ploughs through the mud

Following persistent rain, the ground was very testing for the European Breeders Fund October Maiden Stakes (Division One) at Doncaster today, but Foreign Accent ploughed through the mud to score in impressive fashion.

The John Gosden-trained son of Machiavellian cost 270,000gns and is entered in the Vodafone Derby - and he looked a cut above average despite showing his lack of racecourse experience with a tardy start.

But he made up ground steadily and when asked to quicken by John Carroll he did so in good style, and taking up the running inside the final quarter mile he drew clear to beat Zaajel by five lengths.

In the two hours before racing began, 4mm of rain fell and the ground was officially changed from soft to heavy after this opening event.

Kieren Fallon who partnered the uneasy favourite Pride Of Dubai, who finished fifth, reported that it was 'desperate'.

Gosden`s assistant George Foster said: 'It has been so soft at home that we have not done any serious work, only steady work. He is a very nice horse and will come on for the experience.'
