Castle Set To Step Up In Trip

Killaghy Castle is likely to run over three miles and one furlong for the first time in the John Smith's Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree on Friday.

Nick Gifford's highly-regarded seven-year-old has won two of his three starts over fences to date, with his only reverse coming behind Fair Along at Newbury when he suffered an injury.

Fully recovered, he easily beat inferior opposition at Sandown over two miles and Gifford is now keen to see if his charge will stay the extra distance.

'I'd prefer to race him over two-and-a-half (miles) but there isn't a race at Aintree,' said Gifford.

'So, he's got the entry over three because the ground is going to be good and if he is ever going to stay three miles it will probably be around there so his most likely target is on Friday.

'They will just go that yard slower over three miles which will help his jumping. The two-miler also looks a very good race and they might just get him at it plenty soon enough.

'It has yet to be confirmed but I think we are going to go for the three-mile-one race.'
