Chekhov Third In Germany

Anton Chekhov ran a bold race for Aidan O´Brien in Hamburg´s BMW Deutsches Derby but had to settle for third behind impressive winner Adlerflug.

Run on testing ground, the 12-furlong German Classic went to the Jens Hirschberger-trained runner, who found an impressive turn of foot after grabbing the initiative shortly after the two-furlong point.

The In The Wings colt readily put some daylight between him and his pursuers to run out a convincing seven-length winner from Antek.

The runner-up travelled sweetly into the straight but could not match the winner´s acceleration at the business end of the race.

Anton Chekhov, who was having his last run under the Ballydoyle banner, was doing all his best work at the finish and flashed home between two rivals to claim third in the shadows of the post.

Hirschberger said: 'I expected a very good run because he can explode, as he had shown before'
