Dobbin signs off on a winner

Tony Dobbin signed off his riding career with a winner aboard Ballyvoge in the Dobbs Finale & Future Best Wishes Novices´ Chase at Carlisle this afternoon.

Trained appropriately by his boss Nicky Richards and at his local track, Dobbin had to work far harder than anticipated on the 4-11 favourite.

The well-backed Lord Samposin appeared to be travelling better turning into the straight but some sloppy leaps handed the initiative back to the hot favourite.

Dobbin, who enjoyed his finest hour in the saddle on Lord Gyllene in the 1997 Grand National, had to show all his customary strength to repel the final challenge of the runner-up after the last to prevail by three-quarters of a length, giving racegoers the result they all wanted.

The Downpatrick jockey finished up sixth on the UK all-time list of National Hunt winning riders with 1,164 victories.
