Fallon takes Golan to new heights

Golan, ridden by Kieren Fallon, won the English 2,000 Guineas today at odds of 11-1.

Second place, one and a quarter lengths away went to Tamburlaine (12-1), partnered by Richard Hughes. In third, a further neck away, was 14-1 chance Frenchman`s Bay, the mount of Pat Eddery.

Golan, drawn 19 on the wide outside, tracked his way to the centre of the course and then took up the running in the final 200 metres.

The colt, trained by Michael Stoute, was having only the second race of his career.

The disappointments of the race, the first English classic of the season, were the Godolphin runners, headed by the favourite Tobougg who never got in an effective blow.

Irish challenger Minardi was a never-nearer fourth.
