Final Call for American veteran

John`s Call has been retired following his third consecutive below-par effort in the Sycamore Breeders` Cup Handicap at Keeneland at the weekend.

The Tom Voss-trained 10-year-old underwent a new lease of life last season when scoring Grade One turf successes in the Sword Dancer Handicap and the Turf Classic.

He was also third to Kalanisi in the Breeders` Cup Turf.

And the veteran began his campaign on a winning note in the Cape Henlopen Stakes at Delaware, looking set for another good season.

But he bled when attempting a repeat win in the Sword Dancer, and he subsequently raced on lasix on his last two outings.

Voss said that John`s Call had an adverse reaction to lasix and that the administration of the drug only made matters worse.

The gelding, whose career included a spell over jumps, retires having won 16 of his 40 starts and earning in excess of 1.57million in prize money.

His retirement follows that of other American stars such as Beautiful Pleasure and A.P. Valentine.
