Fitzgerald appeal tomorrow

Jockey Mick Fitzgerald will appear before the Jockey Club`s disciplinary committee tomorrow to appeal against a six-day riding ban.

The stewards will consider an appeal lodged by Fitzgerald, the rider of Surprising, who finished third in the Jockeys` Employment And Training Scheme Hurdle Race, at Cheltenham on November 18th.

He was unhappy with the decision of the local stewards to find him guilty of irresponsible riding and suspend him from riding for six days.

Surprising finished second but was placed behind Telemoss following the stewards` finding of irresponsible riding.

The ban, which runs from November 27th to December 1st and December 3rd, at present rules him out of the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday but his planned mount, Marlborough, was today not among the 16 confirmations left in the race.

Marlborough, trained by Nicky Henderson for owner Sir Robert Ogden, would have been the top weight.

Fitzgerald said after the ban that he considered it'very harsh', especially in view of his previous disciplinary record.
