Former National winning jockey dies

Dick Saunders, the oldest rider to win the Grand National, died last night after a long illness. He was 68.

Saunders lifted the world`s greatest steeplechase as an amateur on Grittar in 1982 at the age of 48 and gave up riding career immediately after winning the Aintree race on the 7-1 favourite for Frank Gilman.

He then gave the rest of his life to racing as an administrator.

He was elected as a member of the Jockey Club in 1981 and was chairman of the Licensing Committee and a Jockey Club steward from 1986-7.

A racecourse steward for over 20 years, he officiated at seven different tracks, including Aintree, Newmarket and Leicester.

He was chairman of the stewards panel at the Martell Grand National meeting.

He served on many Jockey Club committees and working groups, most recently the Jockey Club`s Grand National Entry Review panel.
