GOWRAN ABANDONED AFTER TWO RACES

Sunday´s meeting at Gowran Park ended controversially when it was called off after just two races had been run.

A deputation of Flat jockeys told the stewards they felt the track was unsafe.

The stewards, having consulted clerk of the course Paddy Graffin, decided 'to cancel the rest of the meeting in the interests of safety'.

According to the riders, who were concerned about the track´s configuration, watering on the two previous days had not been absorbed into the firm ground, leaving the course slippery.

However, racecourse manager Ger O´Callaghan said:'The ground was firm at declaration time on Friday and we watered to have it good or good to firm. the watering stopped yesterday evening.'

Following further deliberations, the stewards instructed Graffin, course manager Ger O´Callaghan and the Jockeys Association to confer 'in the near future' regarding the track configuration to avoid a similar situation.
