Godolphin 1-2 in juvenile fillies

Godolphin`s Tempera lifted the $1 million Breeders` Cup Juvenile Fillies on Saturday, boosting the Dubai team ahead of Fantastic Light and Sakhee`s bids for big all-age races later in the championship card.

The 11-1 chance under David Flores collared stablemate Imperial Gesture late to clinch a one-two for Godolphin and U.S. trainer Eoin Harty.

Frankie Dettori, aboard 50-1 longshot Imperial Gesture, pulled clear of Neil Drysdale`s Bella Bellucci in third.

Bobby Frankel`s record in the Breeders Cup sank to 0-38 as the favoured You could only manage fourth, after Flute`s disappointing seventh in the Distaff.

Unbridled Elaine, ridden by Pat Day, won the 2.36 million-dollar Breeders Cup Distaff today, but the 14 million-dollar day of racing got off to a horrifying start with a pre-race injury to Exogenous.

Unbridled Elaine made a furious charge down the stretch and nipped defending champion Spain at the wire to win the 1 1/8 mile race for fillies and mares three years old and up.

Spain broke to the early lead from the gate, ran just off the pace for the first half of the race and made a move to the front after the half-mile mark.

As the field reached the top of the stretch, it appeared to be Spain`s race as the filly opened a two-length lead. But as she tired down the stretch, 12-1 shot Unbridled Elaine stormed on the outside with huge strides and won by a head.

'She was comfortably placed,' Day said. 'Before the eighth pole I got her to the outside and she responded beautifully. She was up to the task.'

Day claimed his third Distaff win and 12th Breeders` Cup victory overall, moving past Jerry Bailey for the all-time lead.

Spain, under Victor Espinoza, came up just short in her bid to become the Distaff`s first back-to-back winner since Bayakoa in 1989-90.

Two Item Limit was third with Alex Solis.

Favored Flute drew the number two post and never really was a factor, finishing seventh withBailey in the saddle. The loss extended trainer Bobby Frankel`s futility in Breeders` Cup races to 37.

Flute had been first or second in all six starts this season with four victories. She placed between Exogenous and Spain in the Beldame Stakes here October 6.

Even on his way to the winner`s circle, Day`s thoughts were with Exogenous.

'It`s a terrible, terrible way to start today,' Day said. 'We just pray she`s all right.'

Trained by Flint Schulhofer and ridden by Javier Castellano, Exogenous didn`t even make it to the track. She reared and flipped over in the aisle leading from the paddock to the track and suffered a head injury.

The filly also got a hind leg entangled in the vertical railings of a gate, and it took some time for track workers to extricate her.

Even then she was unable to rise. She was sedated and given steroids to reduce the inflammation from the head injury, then pulled into the horse ambulance and taken to the equine hospital where her condition was to be monitored.
