Godolphin Take Matriarch

Cocoa Beach provided Godolphin with an eighth Group or Grade One victory of the year in the Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

The bulk of the team's top flight wins have been Stateside with Cocoa Beach providing one of them in the Beldame Stakes before she finished second in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic.

She went one better this time though under Ramon Dominguez and rattled down the short home straight to pinch the race close home from Precious Kitten.

"I was a bit worried about dropping her back to a mile as I think nine furlongs is the best distance for her," said trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

"But Cocoa Beach has always had a good turn of foot and plenty of speed.

"She will stay here in the United States. We'll bring her back next year in May probably and find a race for her," he told the Godolphin website.
