Godolphin back on the double

Godolphin swept back to form at York yesterday with a big-race double which put the Dubai team on the scoreboard in England for the first time this season. They had previously drawn a blank since their return although they achieved Classic success with Noverre in France on Sunday.

However, the British cupboard was bare until Marienbard (5-1) broke the duck with a one-length success over longtime leader Samsaam in the Merewood Homes Yorkshire Cup. Eternal Spring was a further five lengths back in third.

'This is a good horse with a good future,' said Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford. That future is likely to be in Cup races with the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on the agenda.

There was a thrilling finish to the Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes with Frankie Dettori managing to drive 10-11 favourite Musha Merr home a neck ahead of the Pat Eddery ridden Potemkin.

Eddery`s efforts were so strong he incurred the wrath of the stewards who handed him with a three-day whip ban for his efforts. The suspension for excessive frequency means Eddery will be absent on May 26th, 28th and 29th.

There was a hint of disappointment from the winner`s camp after the race. 'He didn`t win quite as well as we thought he would,' admitted Crisford.

Long term plans are unlikely to include a trip to Epsom, with Wednesday`s Dante runner-up Celtic Silence and Tuesday`s Predominate Stakes entry Wareed ahead of yesterday`s winner in Godolphin`s Vodafone Derby pecking order.
