Godolphin beat Coolmore to top lot

Godolphin landed another big-money win over Coolmore last night.

Fresh from Fantastic Light`s dramatic defeat of Galileo at Leopardstown, the Dubai-based operation got the better of their Irish rivals again to land the most expensive lot as the Keeneland Sales got under way in the USA.

Their agent John Ferguson outbid Demi O`Byrne, representing John Magnier and Michael Tabor, for a colt by Storm Cat who topped the opening day`s trade at $5.5m.

The choice yearling is a brother to smart sprinter Bernstein, who was owned by Magnier and Tabor, and Godolphin supremo Sheikh Mohammed said: 'I liked the way he stands and the way he walked.

'He`s athletic looking. I`m happy to have him.'

The colt is set to winter in Dubai before being put in to training in the USA next year.

Hamdan Al Maktoum forked out $2m for the opening day`s most expensive filly, a daughter of Theatrical, while Coolmore`s biggest buy was a $1.8m colt by Storm Cat.

The sale, featuring some of the world`s best-bred bloodstock, lasts for 13 days.
