Goffs All-Ireland Thoroughbred Broodmare Championship At Carnew Show

The Goffs Bloodstock Sales All-Ireland Thoroughbred Broodmare Championship will be held at Carnew Agricultural Show, Wicklow on the 21st of July, 2007.

With a prize fund of ?4,000, the aim of this championship is to showcase and encourage the production of quality National Hunt stock by setting standards and rewarding improvements in the pedigree and performance of broodmares.

Mrs Marian Condren of the Irish Shows Association commented 'We believe that this championship will encourage the breeding of correct, athletic thoroughbred horses with good conformation and pedigree coupled with bone and substance that are likely to go on to become successful racehorses. The championship will give recognition to breeders who keep quality mares capable of producing quality young stock for the National Hunt market'.

The championship is confined to thoroughbred mares registered in the Weatherby´s General Stud Book or the Weatherby´s Non-thoroughbred Stud Book, with a foal at foot by a sire registered in Weatherby´s General Stud Book. Judging will be based on conformation, pedigree and the likelihood of producing a steeplechaser. Winner of last year´s championship was Jim Mernagh´s mare Supreme Kellycarra, a Supreme Leader bumper winner from the family of Moscow Flyer.

In addition to the mare class there will be a ´Best Colt foal´ class and a ´Best filly foal´ class for the progeny of the mares entered in the Championship.

Goffs Chairman Eimear Mulhern said 'This is the second year that Goffs will sponsor this event and we are delighted to be associated with an initiative that rewards breeders of quality National Hunt animals'.
