HRI Grant Aid For Wexford

The Board of Horse Racing Ireland has approved 55% grant aid for a ?145,000 track extension at Wexford Racecourse incorporating a new bend into the straight.

This follows the purchase by the racecourse of additional land which allows them to extend the racetrack by 1? furlongs to 1 mile 3? furlongs. This is the first phase of a proposed ?2.1 million development project at Wexford.

Commenting on the decision, Michael Murphy, Chairman of Wexford racecourse said: 'We plan to complete this track extension in 2006 in readiness for the 2007 racing year. Wexford currently has an undulating right-handed course of one mile and two furlongs and regularly attracts full fields in both flat and national hunt races. This work will give us greater flexibility when working with HRI's programmes committee to provide competitive and entertaining racing.'

Jason Morris of Horse Racing Ireland said: 'This extension work means that we will be able to improve the quality of the racing programme at Wexford. It should, in time, also provide a facility for much-needed additional winter racing.'
