International title for Lingfield race

Lingfield Park`s new race, which could figure as Johannesburg`s prep-run for the Kentucky Derby, will be called the Foster`s - International Trial Stakes, it was announced today.

The one-mile contest, which will carry total prize money of Stg£50,000, will be run at 2.10 on Martell Grand National day in order to benefit from Channel 4`s live coverage.

Trainer Aidan O`Brien sent last season`s Breeders` Cup Juvenile winner to the Surrey track for a workout on the Polytrack last week and expressed his satisfaction with the surface.

Officials at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, are assisting Lingfield`s owners, Arena Leisure, in promoting the new race to American racing fans.

Karl Schmitt, senior vice-president of communications at Churchill Downs, said: 'Observers on these shores are following Johannesburg`s training schedule with great enthusiasm.'

Exact details of the field are yet to be confirmed but Ian Renton, Arena`s director of racing, said: 'We hopethat our new race, great sponsor and the opportunity to see some of the world`s leading horses on our Polytrack surface will result in an exciting day`s racing.

'Being run before the Grand National, the Foster`s - International Stakes will provide a great warm-up for racing fans.'
