Joe Tizzard undergoes operation

Joe Tizzard has undergone surgery on a back injury sustained in a fall at Hereford.

Tizzard was taken to Hereford General Hospital on Tuesday after parting company with the Nigel Hawke-trained Soul King in the Manny Bernstein Sky Sports Text Page 378 Handicap Chase.

The English rider was initially taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays on a suspected badly-bruised back but he was transferred to a specialist unit at Oswestry this morning.

Colin Tizzard, the jockey`s father, confirmed that his son has had surgery on the injury but he does not know how it went yet.

He said: 'We are on our way to see him now. He`s gone up to Shropshire to a specialist back hospital to have an operation to put his vertebrae back in line.

'He`s got a vertebra out of line and a large haematoma in the middle of his back. He had the operation this morning.'

Tizzard is the second jockey to suffer a serious injury in recent weeks after Adrian Maguire damaged his neck in a fall at Warwick nearly two weeks ago.

Maguire is facing at least a three-month lay-off but Tizzard said there has been no discussion yet on how long his son may be out.

He said: 'I`ve got no idea at all. I really don`t know how long before he could be back.'
