Johnson partners Boys at Aintree

Richard Johnson is to partner What`s Up Boys in the Martell Grand National on Saturday after Philip Hobbs gave the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup winner the green light to tackle the race in favour of Thursday`s Martell Cup.

Hobbs has been tempted by the National as the ground is unlikely to be on the easy side and the weights will not be going up owing to the presence of Alexander Banquet and Marlborough.

Hobbs said: 'With the ground looking like it will be good for the National What`s Up Boys is more likely to go for that and Richard Johnson will ride.

'I admit that the Martell Cup might not take a lot of winning but then again he might get out-paced in that while the way the National will be run should suit him.'

Hobbs also has Village King in the National but that horse is unlikely to make the cut.
