Johnson resigned to 3 month absence

Richard Johnson has given up hopes of making a speedy recovery from the injuries he sustained in a fall at Exeter last week.

The jockey had been hoping that his broken right leg would heal quicker than doctors were expecting.

But he admitted today the original diagnosis that he would need at least a three-month break from riding looks set to prove accurate.

Johnson, who was a spectator at Cheltenham today, told the Racing Channel: 'I have just been speaking to my physio, Rabbit Slattery, and we can`t speed the growth of the bone.

'Realistically three months is what we`re hoping for and obviously Cheltenham in March is the one to be 110 per cent for.

'It is frustrating as the stables that I ride for, Philip Hobbs, Henry Daly and Alan King, are all starting to get going with their `serious string`.

'But hopefully they`ll all still be around and there will be some good rides to look forward to when I get back.'

The 24-year-old, was taken to the Royal Devon and ExeterHospital after his tumble on the ill-fated Ilico II in a novice chase.

'I can`t thank the hospital enough for everything they did for me and all the phone calls that they had to put up with, asking where I was and how I was doing,' said Johnson, who is now thinking of going on holiday with his girlfriend, Zara Phillips.

'They were getting annoyed with me wanting to walk around all the time but I was discharged last Friday.

'Sun and warmth is good for the bones so it`s probably going to be a good idea to get away.'
