Kelso Off But Huntingdon On

Freezing overnight temperatures have claimed this afternoon's seven-race card at Kelso, with officials calling the meeting off shortly before 11am.

Clerk of the course Johnnie Fenwicke-Clennell looked at 8am but was forced to check again at 9.30am and then later in the morning before pulling the plug.

He said: 'We have had to abandon. The sun has gone in, it is cloudy and the track is still frozen.

'Temperatures are about plus two in the shade but there is the wind-chill to take into account and the experts say there is little chance of the frost coming out.'

However, Huntingdon were given the all-clear to race after a frost-free night.

Overnight temperatures failed to dip below zero degrees, which meant clerk of the course Fiona Needham had no reason to hold a precautionary 7.30am inspection.

'There are absolutely no problems this morning and we are set fair for a good day,' she said.

The cold weather could also have an effect on tomorrow's racing with Ayr having called a precautionary inspection at 6.45am.

Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead will take a look at the track as overnight temperatures are forecast to dip well below freezing.

'As there is a band of high pressure right over us, the Met Office believe it could get as low as minus four to minus five tonight,' she said.

'If that is the case I would be pretty pessimistic of racing.

'However, temperatures are far more favourable for Saturday's meeting and I would be more confident that should be okay, as it stands.'
