Llewellyn stalls on National ride

Carl Llewellyn will select his ride for the Gala Group Scottish Grand National later this week after partnering both Spanish Main and Hannigan`s Lodger in work for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies tomorrow morning.

The jockey will be aiming to improve the stable`s fantastic record in the race with novices, with Captain Dibble (1992) and Earth Summit (1994) both landing the spoils for Twiston-Davies in their first full season over fences.

Both of this year`s possible runners are in their novice season but Llewellyn is hopeful that both have great chances.

'Spanish Main is an out-and-out staying type,' the jockey told the Racing Channel.

'We`ve schooled him since he fell in the National and he has jumped fine and we will school him again - I don`t think there`ll be any problems.

'There is a little bit of a doubt about Hanningan`s Lodger getting the trip but she`s very tough and consistent, you can`t knock her.

'I`ll ride them both in work tomorrow and then make a decision, probably on Thursday.

'We`ve won it twice with novices and ours must have a great chance of doing it again.'

Another novice to have been successful in the race was last year`s winner Paris Pike, whose trainer Ferdy Murphy is likely to be represented in this year`s contest by Paddy`s Return, the horse responsible for taking out a quarter of the field in the Grand National when veering riderless across the 10th fence.

Murphy said: 'He`s a bit of a delinquent, even at home on the gallops.

'But on the racecourse he`s very much like Paris Pike - although not as classy - in that he is a relentless galloper.'

Stablemate Addington Boy, another early casualty in the National, may wait for the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown seven days later.

'He`s come home fine from Aintree but I would just be worried about him over four miles, if he got tired he might start taking chances with the fences.'

On the betting front, Take Control - one of Martin Pipe`s multiple entry - has attracted further support with William Hill and was cut to 8-1 from 9-1 with Paddy`s Return (14s from 16s) also popular.

Ardstown remains the 6-1 favourite with the English firm.
