Metaphorical wore down odds-on-favourite Emporio in the mile maiden at Listowel.

Emporio (1/2) looked to have poached a winning lead reaching the final furlong but Metaphorical had him in his sights and cut into the lead the whole way home.

He got up in the final stride to grab the victory by a head at 3/1. Hillcrest Avenue completed the placings in third at 20/1.

This was a third winner on the card for Wayne Lordan who was also successful on The Acropolis and My Sister Sarah

Metaphorical gave trainer Aidan O'Brien an across-the-card treble as he also supplied The Acropolis and won the French Derby today for the first time with St Mark's Basilica, in Chantilly.

Lordan said: "I fancied him a bit the last day but it was seven (furlongs) at Gowran where he had an inside draw and it just didn't happen for him. Today I was drawn wide and was able to get him out into a positive position.

"The second horse was fifth in the Guineas and in fairness my horse battled hard. He won well - ish."
