Macaire indicates that Jair du Cochet may side-step Gold Cup for Cathcart Chase.

Trainer Guillaume Macaire has indicated that his Jair du Cochet may yet side-step a rematch with dual Gold Cup winner Best Mate after indicating that the gelding is to be entered in the Cathcart Cup Chase at Cheltenham.

The French trained star chaser defeated Best Mate earlier this season but performed dismally when pulling up in the King George VI Chase over Christmas. However he bounced back to his best form with an impressive win in the Pillar Property Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Afterwards Macaire reported 'I would prefer to win the Cathcart than finish fourth or fifth in the Gold Cup. It´s very difficult, this is Best Mate´s kingdom and it is difficult to beat him here. We will see, it depends on the owner´s choice.'

However he also added 'We will consider the Gold Cup because his chance is really serious.'

Jair du Cochet is now 6/1 with Ladbrokes for the Gold Cup.
