Marmalade tops Prince Of Wales field

Duke Of Marmalade, considered by some to be a possible Royal Ascot banker, heads 18 horses left in Wednesday´s Prince Of Wales´s Stakes.

Aidan O´Brien´s colt already has two Group One wins to his credit this term, most recently in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, and is one of four possibles for the handler along with Mount Nelson, Red Rock Canyon and Song Of Hiawatha.

Finsceal Beo finished second at the Curragh and she could reoppose for Derby-winning handler Jim Bolger, although the four-year-old is also engaged in Tuesday´s Queen Anne Stakes.

Sageburg, who has been supplemented for that mile event, is the most high-profile absentee in the Wales´s field but the French could still be represented by the Elie Lellouche-trained Loup Breton.

Godolphin have the choice of Happy Boy or Literato in the 10-furlong contest.

Sir Michael Stoute relies on Ask after taking out Promising Lead.

Simon Christian, racing manager to owner Patrick Fahey, said: "I have been away and it´s entirely up to the trainer and the weather, but the owner did tell me that he has spoken to Sir Michael Stoute and he´s been entered for the Prince Of Wales´s Stakes and hopefully he´ll run.

"He´s been entered at the five-day stage and I would imagine he´ll run if it´s not too firm and any rain would be appreciated."

The five-year-old was a narrow second in the Canadian International last term and made a winning return when landing a Sandown Group Three in April.

That victory came over 10 furlongs - the trip he faces at Ascot - but Christian feels the son of Sadler´s Wells is pretty versatile as he also won the 13-furlong Huxley Stakes last year at Chester.

"He seems effective over 10 and 12 furlongs and gets 12 furlongs well," Christian added.

"But if conditions are in his favour over 10, a fast run race on decent ground, he is effective, although obviously he stays 12 ideally."

The ground at Ascot is currently reported to be good, good to soft in places after 11 millimetres of rain overnight.

John Gosden could be double-handed with last year´s St Leger hero Lucarno and Pipedreamer, while Henry Cecil still has Phoenix Tower engaged.

Hattan, Petara Bay, Pressing, Regime, Sixties Icon and Stotsfold complete the possibles.
