Munir takes the Greenham stakes at Newbury

Munir finally gave jockey Richard Hills something to smile about when quickening nicely to take the Lanes End Greenham Stakes at Newbury this afternoon.

Following the eclipse of the much-touted Nayef in Thursday`s Craven Stakes, Hills was in need of a fillip and it arrived in the shape of Munir who is now as low as 8-1 for the 2000 Guineas with the Tote.

Trained by his father Barry, the Indian Ridge colt came with a nicely-timed run over a furlong out before showing a neat turn of foot off a muddling pace to beat Frenchman`s Bay by two and a half lengths.

Jockey Hills said: 'It was a muddling pace as all the trials have been but I asked him to quicken after the two furlong pole and away he went.

'I can tell you at the end of this week it`s nice to have a bubble that has not burst.

'This horse is a miler and Nayef will get further but don`t ask me about the Guineas as I will have to discuss it with all the people concerned,' he added.

Hills senior said: 'He`s got a turn of foot and that`s what won the race. It could be a tricky decision for Richard about whether he rides this horse or Nayef in the Guineas but a nice one all the same.'

Tamburlaine could only finish fourth in the race but the run did not disappoint trainer Richard Hannon who said: 'I`m happy enough with that as he`ll be a much better horse when they go a decent pace on lively ground.'

However, William Hill did not share Hannon`s optimism and pushed Tamburlaine out to 10-1 from 4-1 for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket next month.

Godolphin`s Tobougg is now clear favourite with all firms for the first colts` Classic and is a best-priced 3-1 with Hills.

Rolly Polly, having her first outing for Henry Cecil, took the Dubai Duty Free Stakes on her British debut in the hands of Richard Quinn but she does not hold a 1000 Guineas entry.

The winning filly sports the colours of veteran French owner Daniel Wildenstein, who split with Cecil in acrimonious circumstances in the early eighties but sent Rolly Polly to the Warren Place trainer after she scored four times in Italy last season.

Cecil said: 'It is good of Daniel Wildenstein to send me another horse after all these years and I`d like to thank him for his loyalty!

'She`s not in the 1,000 Guineas but she could be entered for the French equivalent.'

Linda Ramsden notched her first winner since taking out a licence to train again this season after Mastermind and her new stable jockey Robert Winston swooped to land the Bet Direct Spring Cup Showcase Handicap.

Mrs Ramsden was absent but her daughter Emma said: 'He had the best of the draw in the Lincoln but he has showed a lot more at home since then. If he`d been drawn better I would have had a proper bet on him today.'

Mark Johnston sent Golden Wells on the long trek from Middleham but the journey proved worthwhile when the colt proved too tough for Welsh Border under Kevin Darley in the Dubai DutyFree Millennium Millionaire Conditions Stakes.
