New data rights deal in Britain

British Horseracing Board chairman Peter Savill hailed a new future for horseracing in Britain as a data rights deal with five leading bookmaking firms was formally unveiled in London yesterday.

After months of legal wrangles, angry exchanges, judicial challenges and uncertainty over the sport`s funding, bookmakers Ladbrokes, William Hill, Coral, Stanley and Dones each signed five-year agreements for the commercial use of data.

With the BHB hoping that other British and Irish bookmakers will follow suit in the coming weeks, the deal is expected to provide a total of Stg#600million for the sport.

The contracts were signed after the BHB last week agreed to change its pricing structure from a turnover-based charge to one based upon a percentage of gross profits on horseracing.

Savill praised the new agreement as 'a historic day for the British racing and betting industries.'
