Niven to bow out today Scotland`s most successful jump jockey, Peter Niven, will bring the curtain down on his distinguished riding career at Perth today. The 37-year-old, who intends to take out a trainer`s licence in the near future, was born at nearby Broughty Ferry and will have his final ride on Flying High for Martin Todhunter in the Isle Of Skye Blended Scotch Whisky Handicap Chase.Confirming Niven`s decision to quit the saddle, his agent Gordon McDonald said: 'He is indeed going to retire. He`s got one ride for Martin Todhunter and then he`s going to pack up.'He said if I could get him a ride before that to do so but he didn`t want one after that one of Martin`s.'And asked if Niven could bow out on a winner, the agent said: 'He`d have an each-way chance. It`s almost too much to ask to win but you never know.'Niven has ridden a total of 1,002 winners and joined an elite band of jump jockeys when reaching 1,000 on Colourful Life at Wetherby in May.He trails only Richard Dunwoody, Peter Scudamore, Tony McCoy, John Francome and Stan Mellor on the all-time list.
