No National Service For Bally

Connections of Ballycassidy have ruled out a tilt at the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree tomorrow week.

The Peter Bowen-trained 10-year-old, who had been a 25-1 chance with totesport to win the world' greatest steeplechase, will instead go for the betfair.com Handicap Chase on the Friday of the three-day meeting.

'We were tempted to have a crack at the National because he's run well round Aintree before,' said Ballycassidy's joint-owner Roddy Owen.

'But in the end, we decided that about three miles on a Flat track like Aintree would be right up his street.

'Heavy going wouldn't suit him, but he'll definitely handle soft and he's never been better in himself.

'He's got a great handicap mark now so the idea is to win a couple of races with him between now and the end of the season.'
