Paris Pike on target for Newbury

Paris Pike has come out of his run in the Pillar Property Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday in good heart and is on course for a crack at the Aon Chase at Newbury on Saturday week.

He was last of the six finishers behind the Irish raider Rince Ri at Prestbury Park, but trainer Ferdy Murphy explained: 'The ground was all against him, it was not his ground at all, but we needed to get a run into him and he was in good form this morning.

'The plan is to go for the Aon and hopefully we will get some good ground, he is a different horse when conditions are to his liking.'

Winner of the 2000 Scottish Grand National, Paris Pike has been earmarked for the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup since he returned from injury, but it is very possible the Martell Grand National could also enter the equation.

Murphy reasoned: 'He is rated about 25lb behind Florida Pearl so if he gets 12st at Aintree, Paris Pike would get in with about 10st 3lb in theory and that would look pretty attractive, though the weights would go up at some stage of course.

'Obviously I would love him to have a crack at the Gold Cup on the good ground which he likes so we will be guided by the weather, but we will know a bit more when the National weights come out on Tuesday and after he runs at Newbury.'
