Pipalong draw fears allayed

Peter Easterby today played down fears that a high draw could scupper the chances of last year`s winner Pipalong in the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup.

He is happy the going at Haydock Park has turned to heavy, ideal for the mudlark Pipalong who must start from stall 13 on the unfavoured stands side in tomorrow`s Stg£150,000 race.

But he admitted the odds are against the mare, trained by his son Tim, becoming the first dual winner of the Group One prize since Be Friendly scored in 1966 and 1967.

'It is unlikely she can win it twice - you are lucky enough to win it once,' he said.

'But she is in good form and the ground has come right. It is soft out there. And I am not worried about the draw.'

Haydock was hit by persistent rain before the start of racing today, and the ground was changed officially to heavy after the first race.

There had been speculation that the altered underfoot conditions would lead jockey Philip Robinson to switch from Summerhill parkes to KierPark in the six-furlong event, for which final declarations were made on Thursday, but he said: 'I think it`s too late.'
