Point-to-Point season to start on time

Next year`s point-to-point season is set to start on schedule, it was announced today.

The majority of the 2001 campaign was cancelled by the Jockey Club`s Point-to-Point Liaison Committee due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease but next year`s programme of 210 fixtures, which is due to start on January 6, has been compiled and is set to be approved next month by the British Horseracing Board.

Mark Davies, chairman of the committee, said: 'We have taken advice from Jockey Club chief veterinary adviser Dr Peter Webbon and received landowners` permission to hold meetings at virtually all courses.

'Whilst we can`t predict or rule out localised foot and mouth flare-ups, we are confident that as things stand the 2002 season will get under way without too much disruption.

'All the associations are pulling together to make this happen.'

The first of this year`s point-to-points to be called off was on February 22 just one day after official confirmation of the first outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Britain for over 20 years.

And on February 26 all point-to-points were cancelled.
