Punters Set Sail With The Admiral

Punters looking for an each-way alternative to the big guns in the Coral-Eclipse have latched on to the Aidan O´Brien-trained Admiralofthefleet.

Although George Washington is regarded as the main challenger from the Ballydoyle team as they prepare to tackle Derby winner Authorized, Stan James have been forced to clip his stablemate to 33/1 from 40/1 ahead of Saturday´s race.

'Although finishing out of the money in the Derby, Admiralofthefleet may well have failed to handle the undulations at Epsom and, as we saw with the result of the Irish Derby, the formbook can be turned upside down under different circumstances,' said the firm´s media and on-course representative Neil Morrice.

'Admiralofthefleet produced a smart change of gear when landing the Dee Stakes at Chester on his previous start when he was perhaps more impressive than stablemate Soldier Of Fortune in the Chester Vase. His supporters are clearly prepared to forgive him his Derby flop and have looked at the bigger picture.'

Authorized will prove a tough nut to crack, however, and trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam is oozing a quiet confidence the Montjeu colt will more than hold his own when he clashes with his elders for the first time.

Although acknowledging the fact none of the last four winners of the premier Classic subsequently won a race, he has the utmost faith in his stable star, who dished out an impressive five-length beating on the Epsom Downs last month under Frankie Dettori.

Chapple-Hyam said: 'Derby winners might not have gone on the last few years, but it is such a hard race and horses have to be so wound up for it and they are often over the top afterwards.

'Luckily for me, Authorized has been working exactly the same now as before Epsom.

'Every horse does get beat, but I have him in slightly better form than before the Derby, and he´s there to run his race.

'People say to wait for the King George to take on the older horses but you have to do it sometime. A lot of good horses have won the Eclipse, so let´s see if he is that good.

'It is very tough for three-year-olds, but I am happy to take the risk.'
