Record number entered in Grand National A record 144 horses have been entered for this year`s English Grand National, which is being run at Aintree on April 6th.Red Marauder, winner of last year`s extraordinary marathon when only two finished without remounting, is trying again - along with Irish favourite and the 2000 winner, Papillon.The total beats the previous best of 141 that dates back to 1984, Aintree racecourse said in a statement released this morning.Many of Europe`s top chasers have also been entered, including French star First Gold, Irish Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Florida Pearl and Hennessy winner What`s Up Boys.Ireland supplies 16 of the entries, France pitches in five and Czech trainer Josef Vana has made two entries.'We have our biggest ever overseas entry,' racecourse director Charles Barnett said. The maximum number of runners allowed in the race itself is 40.
